Book review and recommendation...Linda Slepicka
Can I Recycle This
This book was discussed in an internet article and I purchased it on Amazon.com. It's a fascinating quick read and I highly recommend it! I learned that some of the items I've been putting in my recycling bin are either not recyclable or have minimal value; I've been separating the caps from bottles and I should leave them together; the most recyclable items are aluminum cans, cardboard boxes and paper bags, plastics labeled PET #1 and HDPE #2, and glass containers. Learning about the entire recycling industry was an eye-opener.

The author is an attorney, environmental activist, and expert on single-use plastics. Here's her website. In the first part of the book she discusses what recycling means and describes the recycling industry from what happens at the sorting facilities to the buying and selling of recycled materials as a commodity. The second section lists 60+ individual items and explains whether they are recyclable or not. The final section discusses humanitarian and ecological impacts, what we as individuals can do, and policy solutions.

Check with the company that picks up your recyclables to see what they accept. I have Waste Management and here is their recycling information.
